IBM is also expanding in Kochi, having opened two campuses in the past year. In November 2023, IBM launched India’s largest GenAI Innovation Centre at Infopark, currently employing 1,500 workers, with plans to grow to 5,000.

The Mumbai-based IT giant plans to invest ₹690 crore in the project, which is designated for electronics R&D and IT/ITeS purposes. However, specific project details remain undisclosed as TCS has not yet responded to inquiries.

Expansion and Immediate Workforce Needs

Alongside its campus development, TCS is actively seeking office space at Infopark in Kochi to accommodate its immediate requirement for 5,000 seats. The company already operates in Infopark, where other major tech firms like IBM, Wipro, and Cognizant are also present.

Kerala’s Minister for Industries met with Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran in Mumbai recently to discuss TCS’s investment in the state.

Business Performance and Growth

TCS reported its third-quarter (Q3) earnings on January 9, showing overall revenue of $7.5 billion, with India contributing 9.8% of total business. India’s revenue growth surged by 70.2% year-over-year, while overall rupee-denominated revenue stood at ₹63,973 crore, marking a 0.44% sequential dip—the slowest Q3 growth in years. However, compared to the previous year, revenue and profit grew by 5.6% and 5.5%, respectively.

IT Infrastructure Expansion in Kerala

In response to rising demand from IT investors, the Kerala government is expanding Infopark by 500 acres and is in discussions to acquire land for Cyberpark expansion in Kozhikode. Minister P. Rajeeve highlighted that initial uncertainties about demand have been surpassed.

In Kakkanad, the government is taking over the Smart City project, originally developed through a public-private partnership (PPP) with Dubai-based Tecom Investments in 2017. With Tecom shifting its focus away from projects outside Dubai, Kerala has reclaimed 246 acres for IT sector development. A state-led committee will oversee the valuation and potential buyout of Tecom’s stake.

IBM’s Rapid Expansion in Kochi

Global technology giant IBM has also been expanding its presence in Kerala. Over the past year, the company established two campuses and, in November, launched its largest GenAI Innovation Centre in India at Infopark, Kochi. With an initial workforce of 1,500, IBM expects to expand to over 5,000 employees.

Kochi is IBM’s fastest-growing campus globally, housing one of its five labs as part of its strategy to tap into the talent pool in India’s tier-2 cities and expand beyond traditional IT hubs.
